Ice, Sleet and Snow. Oh My!

We got home from our Thanksgiving trip to Florida last night. It was a lot of fun even though Billy, Kirk and Olivia were sick for part of the time. But it's like Grandma said..."if you have to be sick there's no better place than Grandma's house."

Ruby and I felt great.
Ruby was patient zero. She started the whole sickness thing with a 105 degree fever a week before we left and was fine and dandy by the time we got to Florida.
And myself? I don't know how I escaped this bug. If the kids get sick I usually get sick. This time was different.
Was I just lucky or was it all the Airborne I was downing?

Yesterday we were in beautiful 80 degree weather.
Today it's in the 20's and a winter storm is in full effect.
At least we have our memories.

Thrift Goodness

I had a great week thrifting which came at a very good time. Next week there will be no thrifting at all unless I want to drag junk home from Florida, which I don't.

Let's start with the practical.
Tupperware cups, snack cups and a vintage red handled ice cream scoop. Need all of these. Well....maybe not need but I can certainly use.

Picked up this beautiful magazine in a perfect unread state for .50 cents.
If you like modern architecture and design you should check it out. (If you haven't already)

Found some of my favorite things.

Pyrex

and mugs!!!

Last week was also great for Christmas stuff.

Christmas cards.
10 cents each.

Christmas dress for Ruby.
Throw this over a black turtleneck and she's set.

Vintage tablecloths. I may sell these on ebay, haven't decided yet.

Ornaments.
I don't think these are very old but at two bucks for the box, it's better than buying new.

And this little guy.
I can feel a collection coming on and I'm on the look-out for more little deers. All I need to do is stick him by some old bottlebrush trees and he'll make a fine Christmas decoration.

Public Service Announcement

Go save the world.
Plug in a fluorescent light bulb.

"The single greatest source of greenhouse gases in the United States is power plants--half our electricity comes from coal plants. One bulb swapped out: enough electricity saved to turn off two entire power plants--or skip building the next two."

I read this a couple months ago and was blown away. We can do something really easy and make a big difference? Sounds good to me! Since then I have been replacing our old light bulbs with the new energy efficient ones. It takes a little while to get used to the light they produce but I have to say I like it better now, it's brighter. I emailed this article to people I knew, I might as well put it up on blog and reach a few more.

ThriftStore:
Week In Review

Haven't been thrifting as much as usual. I guess I'm in a lull. Or maybe I've had better things to do. Dunno.
I did make it out a couple of times this past week and managed to find some cool stuff.

The new Salvation Army downtown. One of the nicest thriftstores I've been to.

Some bright and cheery sheets and pillow cases. I might save them for Ruby to use when she moves to a big girl bed. If not, these would make some really pretty dresses or maybe even pillows.

Some groovy old terry towels. I have some ideas for these. Mainly a cute swimsuit cover-up for Ruby.

Yellow platter. Never have enough of these.

Tablecloth.

And this one is a cheat. I found this last year.
But this week I finally hung it up over Ruby's play kitchen. Looks super cute!

Oh, Ruby Lou
What Did You Do!?!?

Don't you know the Melanie Griffith/Meg Ryan "A bee stung my lips and now I'm having a massive allergic reaction" look is SO out.
Next time try to stay in the lines.

Could It Get Any Better?!?!?!?!

It looks like a good majority of Americans FINALLY woke up to the scam that is the republican party.

Claire McCaskill won.
Stem cell amendment passed.
Phil Kline got his wacky ass voted OUT.
South Dakota voted down the fundamentalist nutjob abortion ban.
The House is back in the Dems control.
Likely that the Senate will be going that way too.

For the first time in 6 years I'm not feeling like an outsider in my own country.

Now let's look 2 years ahead. It's time to start on it now.
Barack Obama for President anyone?????

**Edited to add** Just got word that Rumsfeld is resigning. Haven't heard this confirmed yet. But if it's true? OMG.
Is it Christmas or something?!?!?!?!?

Election Eve

Tomorrow is the day.
I'm getting nervous.
Trying to stay cautiously optimistic.

Time to take a deep breath, chill out, listen to Dave Brubeck.........
and Take Five.

Ding Dong, The Witch is Dead

Well, maybe not dead. But charged with a felony is okay too.
